Locksmith 4 Less

Residential Lock Rekeying in Memphis, TN

Rekeying is one of the most useful and least understood services in residential locksmithing. A lot of homeowners assume that when they need to change who has access to their home, they need to buy all new locks. In most cases, they do not. Rekeying keeps your existing lock hardware in place and changes the internal pin configuration so the old keys stop working and a new set of keys takes over.

It is faster and more affordable than a full lock replacement, and it achieves the same result: the people who had keys before can no longer get in. Locksmith 4 Less provides residential lock rekeying across the Memphis service area, and we handle the entire process at your door.

How Rekeying Works

What Actually Happens Inside the Lock

Understanding rekeying starts with understanding how a pin tumbler lock works, which is the type of lock found on the vast majority of residential doors in the Memphis area.
Inside every pin tumbler lock cylinder, there are a series of small spring-loaded pins arranged in a line. Each pin has two pieces: a key pin (bottom) and a driver pin (top). When you insert the correct key, the grooves on the key blade push each key pin to exactly the right height so that the gap between the key pin and the driver pin lines up perfectly with the shear line of the cylinder. That alignment is what allows the cylinder to rotate and the lock to open.

When we rekey a lock, we remove the existing key pins and replace them with a new set of pins that match a different key profile. The lock body, the bolt, the trim, and everything you see on the outside of the door stays exactly the same. Only the pins inside the cylinder change. The old keys no longer push the pins to the correct height, so they no longer work. The new keys do.

The process takes about 10 to 15 minutes per lock. We do it right at your door.

When Rekeying Is the Right Choice

Situations Where Rekeying Makes More Sense Than Replacing

Rekeying is the right move when the lock hardware itself is in good condition but you need to invalidate the existing keys. Here are the most common situations where Memphis homeowners call us for rekeying.

You just moved into a new home

This is the single most important time to rekey your locks. You have no idea how many copies of the old keys exist. The previous owner, their family, their neighbors, contractors, cleaners, pet sitters, real estate agents. Any one of them could still have a working key to your front door. Rekeying solves that problem in under an hour.

You lost a house key

A lost key is a security risk, especially if it was in a wallet or bag that also contains your ID or address. Rekeying makes the lost key useless.

A roommate or tenant moved out.

If someone who lived in your home no longer does, and they had a key, rekeying ensures they cannot come back in. This also applies to Airbnb hosts and short-term rental owners who rotate guests.

You ended a relationship

If an ex-partner had a key to your home, rekeying is the fastest and most affordable way to regain exclusive access.

You let go of a service provider

Housekeepers, dog walkers, contractors, babysitters. Anyone you gave a key to over the years who no longer needs access. Rekeying eliminates their entry without replacing the locks.

You want all your locks on one key

If every door in your home currently uses a different key, rekeying can bring them all into alignment. We reconfigure each lock to match a single key profile so you only need to carry one house key. This is the same "keyed-alike" result you get with new locks, but at a lower cost since we are working with your existing hardware.

Rekeying vs. Replacing

How to Decide Between Rekeying and New Locks

We covered this briefly on the lock replacement page, but it is worth expanding here since it is the most common question we get.

Choose rekeying when:

Your locks are in good physical condition. The bolt extends and retracts smoothly. The cylinder turns without stiffness or resistance. The hardware looks fine and you are happy with the style and security grade. You simply need to change who has key access.

Choose replacement when:

The lock is physically damaged, corroded, or worn. The mechanism is failing. The lock is a low-grade builder lock that came with the house and you want something stronger. You want to switch from a traditional keyed lock to a keyless or smart lock system. The lock was compromised in a break-in.

The cost difference is real.

Rekeying is typically less than half the cost of a full lock replacement because we are not installing new hardware. We are working with what is already on the door. If your locks are in good shape, rekeying saves you money while achieving the same security outcome.

If you are not sure which route to take, call us. We inspect the locks when we arrive and give you an honest recommendation. If rekeying is sufficient, that is what we will tell you.

The Rental Property and Landlord Angle

Rekeying for Landlords, Property Managers, and Rental Owners

If you manage rental properties in the Memphis area, rekeying should be part of your tenant turnover process every time. Tennessee law does not explicitly require landlords to rekey between tenants, but the liability exposure of leaving old keys in circulation is significant. A former tenant with a working key who enters the property after their lease ends creates a situation no landlord wants to deal with.
We work with landlords and property managers across Memphis, Bartlett, Millington, Olive Branch, and the surrounding area. For multi-unit properties, we can rekey multiple units in a single visit and configure all locks on a master key system if desired.
Rekeying during turnover is fast, affordable, and protects both the landlord and the incoming tenant. It is one of the simplest risk-reduction steps in property management.

Lock Rekeying Questions

How long does it take to rekey a lock?

About 10 to 15 minutes per lock. A full house with four or five exterior locks is usually done in under an hour.
Yes. This is one of the most common requests we get. We reconfigure every lock to match a single key profile so you only carry one house key.
Some smart locks have a physical key cylinder that can be rekeyed. Others are fully electronic with no key cylinder. We can assess your smart lock and let you know what options are available.
No. Rekeying is a standard locksmith procedure that does not harm the lock. The hardware stays on the door and functions exactly as it did before, just with new keys.
We typically provide two or three new keys per lock. If you need more, we cut additional copies during the same visit.

It depends on whether the lock was damaged. If the lock hardware is intact and only the keys are a concern, rekeying is sufficient. If the lock was physically compromised, a replacement is the better option. We assess the situation on-site and give you an honest recommendation.
