Toyota Key Types

Toyota Key Systems from Past to Present

Toyota has rolled out key technology at a deliberate pace, which means each generation was thoroughly tested before becoming standard. Here is what that looks like across the lineup.

Non-transponder metal keys (mid-1990s and before).

Older Toyotas including the Camry, Corolla, Pickup, and Land Cruiser from this era used a standard metal key with no electronic component. No programming required. These are increasingly rare but still show up.

Transponder keys (late 1990s to mid-2010s).

Toyota introduced transponder chip keys across the lineup starting in the late 1990s. The Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlander, Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, Sienna, and Sequoia all used transponder keys during this era. Toyota uses a Texas Instruments-based chip system similar to Subaru. The engine will not start unless the immobilizer reads the correct chip in the key head.

Remote head keys (mid-2000s to mid-2010s).

Toyota combined the transponder key and remote buttons into a single integrated unit on many models. The Camry, Corolla, and RAV4 all used versions of this format. The key blade is built into the remote head.

Toyota Smart Key (2007 to present).

Toyota began rolling out the Smart Key system with push-button start starting with the Camry and Avalon and expanding across the lineup. Today, the Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlander, 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra, Sienna, Grand Highlander, and Crown all use the Smart Key system. The fob stays in your pocket, and the car handles entry and ignition wirelessly. Every Smart Key includes a hidden emergency blade for manual door access.

Toyota Camry and RAV4: The Two Most Common Calls

What Camry and RAV4 Owners Should Know

The Camry and RAV4 account for a massive share of our Toyota calls in Memphis. Both models have been in continuous production for decades, and we see every key generation regularly.
Camry. The 2002 to 2006 Camry used a transponder key with a separate remote. The 2007 to 2011 generation introduced the remote head key on most trims and the Smart Key on the XLE and above. The 2012 to 2017 generation expanded Smart Key availability. The 2018 and newer Camry uses the Smart Key across all trims.
One thing Camry owners should know: the 2007 to 2011 generation is the transition period where you might have either a remote head key or a Smart Key depending on your trim level. Check how you start the car. If you insert a blade, you have the remote head key. If you press a button, you have the Smart Key.

RAV4. The 2006 to 2012 RAV4 used a remote head key. The 2013 to 2018 generation offered both the remote head key and the Smart Key depending on trim. The 2019 and newer RAV4 standardized the Smart Key. The RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime use the same Smart Key system as the standard RAV4.

Toyota Trucks: Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner

Key Service for Toyota Truck and SUV Owners

Toyota trucks have a strong presence in the Memphis metro. The Tacoma is a favorite for both daily driving and work use. The Tundra handles the heavy-duty jobs. And the 4Runner has a following among outdoor enthusiasts similar to the Jeep Wrangler crowd.

Tacoma.

The second-generation Tacoma (2005 to 2015) used a transponder key with a separate remote on most trims. The third generation (2016 to 2023) introduced the Smart Key on higher trims. The current fourth generation (2024 to present) uses the Smart Key across the lineup.

Tundra.

The first-generation Tundra (2000 to 2006) used a transponder key. The second generation (2007 to 2021) offered both remote head keys and Smart Keys depending on trim. The current third generation (2022 to present) standardizes the Smart Key.

4Runner.

The 4Runner was one of the last Toyota models to transition to the Smart Key. Fourth-generation models (2003 to 2009) used a transponder key. Fifth-generation models (2010 to 2024) used a remote head key on most trims, with the Smart Key only appearing on the Limited and TRD Pro in later years. The sixth generation (2025) finally standardizes the Smart Key.

Toyota truck owners in Memphis, Millington, Oakland, and Arlington put serious mileage on these vehicles. If your truck key is showing wear, get a replacement or duplicate cut before it gives out.

Toyota and Lexus

How Toyota Keys Relate to Lexus

Lexus is Toyota’s luxury division, and the two brands share the same underlying security platform. The Toyota Highlander and Lexus RX, for example, are built on the same architecture. The Toyota 4Runner and Lexus GX share a platform. The immobilizer technology, transponder chip families, and Smart Key communication protocols are all closely related.
But as we noted on the Lexus page, the keys are not interchangeable. Each key is programmed to a specific vehicle, and the fob designs, part numbers, and programming codes are distinct between the two brands.
The shared platform works in your favor because the diagnostic tools overlap. We carry equipment that services both Toyota and Lexus, which means if your household has one of each, we handle both in a single visit.
