Locksmith 4 Less

GMC Locksmith in Memphis, TN

GMC and Chevrolet share a platform. The Sierra is mechanically identical to the Silverado. The Yukon shares its bones with the Tahoe and Suburban. The Terrain runs the same architecture as the Equinox. What that means for key and lock service is that GMC vehicles use the same GM security systems we covered on the Chevrolet page, but with their own model-specific programming codes and key configurations.

If you drive a GMC in the Memphis area and need a key replaced, a fob programmed, or help with a lockout or ignition issue, Locksmith 4 Less has the GM diagnostic tools and GMC-compatible key blanks to take care of it on-site.

What GMC Owners Need to Know About Their Keys

GMC Keys Are GM Keys, but Not Interchangeable

Because GMC and Chevrolet share platforms, owners sometimes assume a Silverado key will start a Sierra or a Tahoe key will work in a Yukon. That is not the case. Even though the key blanks may look identical and the security hardware is the same, each key is electronically paired to a specific vehicle. A key programmed for one VIN will not start another, regardless of how similar the trucks are.
This matters when you are shopping for replacement keys online or considering borrowing a spare from a family member who drives the Chevy equivalent. The physical key may fit the ignition, but the immobilizer will block the engine from starting. Every GMC needs its own programmed key.
Here is how GM’s security platforms apply to the GMC lineup:

VATS and Passlock (1990s to early 2000s).

Older models like the Jimmy, Envoy, and early Yukons used these systems. VATS keys have a resistor pellet in the blade. Passlock uses an internal sensor in the ignition cylinder rather than the key itself.

PK3 transponder keys (early to mid-2000s).

The Envoy, Yukon, and Sierra from this era used a transponder chip key that communicates with the body control module.

Remote head keys (mid-2000s to mid-2010s).

GMC combined the transponder and remote buttons into a single unit with a flip-out or fixed blade on models like the Terrain, Acadia, and certain Sierra trims.

Proximity smart keys (2014 to present).

Current GMC models use a push-button smart key system. The Yukon, Sierra, Terrain, and Acadia all use this format today.

Services

GMC Locksmith Services

Car Key Replacement

We replace keys for every GMC model and key generation. Lost all your keys to a 2022 Sierra? We create one from scratch. Have one key for a 2010 Yukon and want a spare? We duplicate it on the spot.

Car Key Programming

Every GMC key from the early 2000s forward requires electronic programming to the vehicle's immobilizer. We carry the GM-specific tools to handle VATS, Passlock, PK3, and current smart key protocols.

Key Fob Service

GMC fobs can fail for several reasons: dead battery, cracked housing, water damage, or a lost connection with the vehicle. We repair fobs, replace batteries, and program replacements.

Car Lockout

Locked your keys inside your GMC? We use non-destructive entry methods to open the vehicle without damage. Trucks, SUVs, and crossovers all have different entry points, and we know how to work with each one.

Ignition Lock Repair and Replacement

GMC trucks and SUVs with high mileage can develop ignition cylinder wear, just like their Chevy counterparts. The 2007 to 2014 Sierra and Yukon generation is particularly prone to this. We fix or replace the cylinder on-site.

Car Key Duplication

One working key is all we need to make a backup. Do it now while the key works. It is always cheaper than a full replacement later.

The Denali Trim and Key Differences

Does the Denali Trim Change Anything About the Key?

GMC owners ask us this regularly, and the answer depends on the model year. On older GMC vehicles, the Denali trim used the same key as the base model. The difference was purely cosmetic and feature-based inside the cabin.
On current models, however, the Denali and AT4 trims may come with different fob features compared to the base SLE or SLT trims. Some Denali trims include remote start as a standard fob function, while lower trims may not. The physical fob can look different, and in some cases, the part number is different.
What this means for replacement: when you call us, tell us the exact trim level along with the year and model. A 2023 Sierra 1500 Denali may need a different fob than a 2023 Sierra 1500 SLE, even though both are the same truck underneath. We stock fobs for the most common configurations and can confirm availability for your specific trim when you call.

Sierra Ignition Problems

The Known Ignition Issue on 2007 to 2014 GMC Trucks

The 2007 to 2014 Sierra and Yukon share the same ignition cylinder design as the Chevrolet Silverado and Tahoe from those same years. GM issued a recall affecting millions of vehicles across both brands for ignition switch defects that allowed the key to slip out of the “run” position while driving.

If you own a Sierra or Yukon from this era and you are experiencing any of the following, call us:
The key is difficult to turn in the ignition. The key feels loose in the cylinder and does not hold position. The vehicle stalls or loses electrical power intermittently while driving. The “Service Theft Deterrent System” message appears on the dash.
We repair and replace ignition cylinders for this generation at your location in Memphis, Collierville, Cordova, or anywhere in our service area. Do not ignore these symptoms. An ignition that fails while you are driving is a safety issue, not just a convenience problem.
