Mercedes was one of the first manufacturers to embed an infrared transmitter inside the key head. Models like the W202 C-Class, W210 E-Class, and W140 S-Class used this system. The key sends an infrared signal to a receiver in the steering column to disarm the immobilizer. These keys also included a traditional metal blade for the ignition and doors. The infrared module required a battery inside the key head, and if that battery died, the car would not start even though the key physically turned in the ignition.
Mercedes introduced the distinctive chrome-topped key on models like the W203 C-Class, W211 E-Class, and W220 S-Class. This generation used a transponder chip along with an integrated remote for lock/unlock. The chrome key was the last Mercedes generation to use a traditional metal blade that inserted into an ignition cylinder.
The current system eliminates the traditional ignition entirely. The key is a flat, card-like fob or a rounded fob with no visible blade on the exterior. An emergency blade is hidden inside for manual door entry. The car detects the fob wirelessly for entry and start. The push-button start system verifies the key's encrypted signal before allowing the engine to run.
We replace Mercedes keys across all three generations. Infrared keys for classic models, chrome keys for mid-2000s vehicles, and KEYLESS-GO smart fobs for current cars and SUVs. If all keys are lost, we create one from scratch.
Mercedes smart keys require encrypted pairing with the vehicle's Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) module. This is a specialized process that demands Mercedes-compatible diagnostic software. We carry the equipment to complete it at your location.
Mercedes key fob batteries die like any other. On older infrared keys, a dead battery means the car will not start at all. On KEYLESS-GO fobs, a dead battery means the wireless functions stop working. We replace batteries and repair fobs on-site.

Ignition Lock Repair and Replacement — Mercedes models from the chrome key era have a physical ignition cylinder that can wear over time. The W203 C-Class and W211 E-Class are models we see this issue on regularly. We repair or replace the cylinder at your location.
Mercedes keys, including the emergency blades inside smart fobs, use a high-security laser-cut profile. We carry the specialized machines to cut these with precision.
