The earliest Subarus, including the Legacy, Impreza, SVX, and Loyale, used a standard metal key with no electronics. These are simple to cut and still occasionally show up in our service calls.
Starting around 2000, Subaru began adding transponder chips to their keys. The Outback, Forester, Impreza, Legacy, Tribeca, and Baja from this era all used a transponder key with a metal blade. Subaru used a Texas Instruments-type chip that communicates with the immobilizer module. The engine will not start unless the correct chip is present.
Subaru began introducing push-button smart keys starting with the 2014 Forester and 2015 Outback on higher trims. By now, the Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Impreza, Legacy, WRX, Ascent, and Solterra all offer or standardize the smart key system. The fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle for keyless entry and push-button start, and includes an emergency blade inside for manual door access.
We replace every Subaru key type at your location. Transponder keys for older models, smart key fobs for current models, and basic metal keys for the earliest Subarus. No original key needed.
— Subaru transponder keys and smart keys both require electronic programming. We carry the diagnostic equipment to pair new keys to Subaru's immobilizer system across all model years.
Subaru fob not responding? We test the battery, inspect the housing and circuit board, and either repair the fob or replace it.
Locked your keys inside your Subaru? We use non-destructive entry tools to open the vehicle without damage. Subaru's door and window seal design varies by model, and we know the right approach for each one.
Older Subarus with a physical ignition cylinder can develop wear after years of daily use. The 2005 to 2014 Outback and Forester are the models we see this on most frequently. We repair or replace the cylinder on-site.
— Have one working Subaru key? A spare made now is cheaper and faster than a full replacement later. We duplicate transponder keys and smart keys at your location.

Subaru owners keep their cars for a long time, so we see a wider spread of model years than most brands. Whatever year your Subaru is, call (901) 206-2020 and we will confirm we can help.
We made similar points on the Jeep page, and they apply here too:
If you are around water, protect the fob. A waterlogged smart key is an expensive problem.
Every Subaru smart key has a small blade inside the fob. If the battery dies while you are at a trailhead, that blade is the only way to manually unlock the driver's door. Practice extracting it before you need to.
If your Subaru is your adventure vehicle, the risk of losing a key in the field is higher than average. A duplicate stored at home means a lost key on a Saturday hike does not turn into an emergency. You drive the spare back out and deal with the replacement on Monday.
The dealer typically requires an appointment and may need to order the key. We show up the same day with the parts on the van.
The dealer requires the car to be at their lot. If the car has no working key, that means a tow. We come to wherever the Subaru is parked, whether that is your driveway in Collierville, a parking lot in Cordova, or the side of the road in Bartlett.
Our rates are below the Subaru dealership for the same end result: a key that starts the car, locks the doors, and operates the smart entry system.
