Locksmith 4 Less

Honda Locksmith in Memphis, TN

Honda is one of the most popular vehicle brands in the Memphis metro, and for good reason. These cars and SUVs run for a long time. It is common for us to get calls from Honda owners who have been driving the same Accord or CR-V for 15 or 20 years and have never needed a locksmith until now. The key finally wore down, the fob stopped responding, or the only key they have ever had finally went missing.
Whether your Honda is brand new or has been in the family for two decades, Locksmith 4 Less has the tools and key blanks to handle any Honda key or lock situation on-site. We are a licensed and insured automotive locksmith serving drivers across the Memphis service area.

Honda Key Types by Era

How Honda Keys Have Evolved

Honda has taken a gradual, methodical approach to key technology over the years. Each generation builds on the last, and older systems stayed in production longer than many other brands. Here is what that looks like:

Non-transponder metal keys (early 1990s and before).

Older Civics, Accords, and Preludes from this era used a plain metal key with no electronic component. These are the simplest Honda keys to replace, though the cars themselves are becoming rare.

Transponder keys (1998 to mid-2010s).

Starting in 1998, Honda began adding transponder chips to their keys. The Accord was one of the first Honda models to get the upgrade, followed by the Civic, CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot, and Element. Honda's transponder system uses a 46 or 47-type chip depending on the model year. The car reads the chip through an antenna coil around the ignition, and if the code does not match, the immobilizer blocks the engine from starting.

Remote head keys (mid-2000s to mid-2010s).

Honda combined the transponder key blade and the remote lock/unlock buttons into a single integrated unit on some models. The Accord, Civic, and CR-V all used versions of this format.

Proximity smart keys (2013 to present).

Honda began rolling out its Smart Entry system starting with the Accord in 2013. By now, most current Honda models use a push-button smart key fob. The driver carries the fob, and the car detects it for keyless entry and push-button start. The CR-V, Civic, Accord, Pilot, Passport, HR-V, and Ridgeline all use this system today.

Car Key Replacement

We replace every Honda key type. From a basic metal key for a 1995 Civic to a proximity fob for a 2024 Accord, we cut and program it at your location. All keys gone? We create one from scratch.

Car Key Programming

Honda's immobilizer system requires professional programming for any key made after 1998. We program 46-chip keys, 47-chip keys, and current smart key fobs using Honda-specific diagnostic software.

Car Key Duplication

If you have one working Honda key, getting a spare made now is the most affordable way to protect yourself. Honda's programming process is simpler and cheaper when a working key is present. Once that key is lost, the cost goes up.

Key Fob Repair and Battery Replacement

Honda fobs are generally reliable, but batteries die, buttons wear out, and water damage happens. We diagnose the issue, swap batteries, repair the fob, or replace it entirely.

Car Lockout

Locked your keys inside your Honda? We open Honda doors using non-destructive entry tools. Quick, clean, and no damage to the vehicle.

Ignition Lock Repair and Replacement

High-mileage Hondas can develop ignition cylinder wear. If the key feels rough going in, the cylinder is hard to turn, or the key will not come out, we fix it on-site.

Laser Key Cutting

Some Honda models use a high-security key cut that requires specialized cutting equipment. We carry the machines to cut these with precision on our mobile units.

The Honda Reliability Factor

Why High-Mileage Hondas Keep Us Busy

Most car brands keep us busy because of key system complexity or theft concerns. Honda keeps us busy for a different reason: these cars last so long that the keys eventually outlive their usefulness.
We routinely get calls from Honda owners in Memphis, Southaven, and Bartlett who are still driving a 2006 Accord or a 2008 CR-V with 200,000 miles on it. The car runs fine. The problem is the key.
After years of daily use, metal key blades wear down. The grooves that align with the lock pins get shallower and less defined. The key starts to feel loose in the ignition, or it takes a few tries to get the door lock to catch. Eventually, the key wears to the point where it barely works at all, or it snaps inside the cylinder.
If your Honda key is showing signs of wear, do not wait for it to break. Call us and get a fresh key cut while the current one can still be used as a reference. A worn key that is still working is much easier to copy from than a key that has snapped in half inside the ignition.

Honda Keys vs. Acura Keys

Since Acura is Honda’s luxury division, owners sometimes wonder whether the keys are the same. They are not interchangeable, but they are closely related.

Honda and Acura use the same underlying immobilizer technology and similar transponder chip families. The key blanks are different, the programming codes are vehicle-specific, and the fob designs are distinct. But the diagnostic tools and programming procedures overlap significantly, which is why we service both brands with the same equipment.

If your household has both a Honda and an Acura and you need key work done on either one, we can handle both vehicles in a single visit.

Can you make a Honda key without the original?

Yes. We create replacement Honda keys from scratch using your vehicle’s VIN and onboard data. No original key needed, even on newer smart key models.
The transponder chip in the key may have failed or lost its programming. The immobilizer is blocking the engine because it does not recognize the chip. We can reprogram the key or create a new one.
