How to Tell Your Fob Battery Is Dying

Signs Your Key Fob Battery Needs to Be Replaced

The battery inside your key fob does not die all at once. It fades gradually, and there are usually clear warning signs before it goes completely dead.

Shorter range.

You used to be able to unlock your car from across the parking lot. Now you have to walk right up to the door and hold the fob close before it responds. That shrinking range is the clearest early indicator of a low battery.

Inconsistent response.

The lock button works on the first press sometimes and takes two or three presses other times. If the behavior is unpredictable, the battery is struggling to send a strong enough signal.

Dashboard warning.

Many newer vehicles display a low key fob battery warning on the dashboard or instrument cluster. If you see a message about your key battery or key fob signal, that is your car telling you directly.

Fob stops working entirely.

If none of the buttons do anything and the push-to-start system will not recognize the fob, the battery has likely died completely. Most vehicles have a backup method to start the car using a dead fob (usually by holding the fob against the start button), but that is a temporary workaround, not a solution.

Most key fob batteries last between two and four years depending on usage. If yours is in that range and showing any of these symptoms, a battery swap will almost certainly fix it.

What We Do

Fast Battery Replacement at Our Shop or Your Location

The process takes about five minutes. Our technician opens the fob shell, identifies the correct battery type, installs a fresh one, and tests every button to make sure the fob is back to full function. We carry batteries for all major fob types, so there is no waiting for a special order.
You have two options:

Walk into our shop.

2204 Whitten Rd, Ste 1, Memphis, TN 38133. No appointment needed. We will swap the battery while you wait.

Call for mobile service.

If you cannot get to the shop, our mobile locksmith will come to your location anywhere in the Memphis service area and replace the battery on the spot.

Either way, we test the fob before handing it back. If the battery swap does not resolve the issue, we inspect the fob further to determine whether the problem is a damaged circuit board, a worn button, or a programming issue. In that case, our key fob repair service covers the next steps.

What If the Battery Is Not the Problem?

When a New Battery Does Not Fix It

About one out of every ten fob issues we see turns out to be something beyond the battery. If the fob still does not work after a fresh battery, here is what might be going on and what we do about it.

The fob lost its programming.

Disconnecting the battery (or leaving a dead battery in too long) can sometimes cause the fob to lose sync with the vehicle. We reprogram the fob to your car using diagnostic equipment. This usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.

The circuit board is damaged.

Water, drops, and age can all damage the internal electronics. If the board is cracked or corroded, the fob needs to be repaired or replaced.

The buttons are worn through.

The rubber contact pads under the buttons wear out over time and stop making reliable contact with the board. We can replace the button pad or the full fob shell depending on availability for your vehicle.

The car's receiver is the issue

In rare cases, the fob is fine and the problem is on the vehicle's end. If we test the fob and confirm it is transmitting correctly, we will let you know so you can have the vehicle's receiving module checked.

The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) regulates all wireless key fob transmitters in the United States, which means every fob operates on a specific approved frequency. If your fob’s transmitter is damaged, it will need to be replaced with one that matches your vehicle’s receiver frequency. We handle that matching process during any fob replacement.
