You used to be able to unlock your car from across the parking lot. Now you have to walk right up to the door and hold the fob close before it responds. That shrinking range is the clearest early indicator of a low battery.
The lock button works on the first press sometimes and takes two or three presses other times. If the behavior is unpredictable, the battery is struggling to send a strong enough signal.
Many newer vehicles display a low key fob battery warning on the dashboard or instrument cluster. If you see a message about your key battery or key fob signal, that is your car telling you directly.
If none of the buttons do anything and the push-to-start system will not recognize the fob, the battery has likely died completely. Most vehicles have a backup method to start the car using a dead fob (usually by holding the fob against the start button), but that is a temporary workaround, not a solution.
2204 Whitten Rd, Ste 1, Memphis, TN 38133. No appointment needed. We will swap the battery while you wait.
If you cannot get to the shop, our mobile locksmith will come to your location anywhere in the Memphis service area and replace the battery on the spot.
Either way, we test the fob before handing it back. If the battery swap does not resolve the issue, we inspect the fob further to determine whether the problem is a damaged circuit board, a worn button, or a programming issue. In that case, our key fob repair service covers the next steps.
Disconnecting the battery (or leaving a dead battery in too long) can sometimes cause the fob to lose sync with the vehicle. We reprogram the fob to your car using diagnostic equipment. This usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.
Water, drops, and age can all damage the internal electronics. If the board is cracked or corroded, the fob needs to be repaired or replaced.
The rubber contact pads under the buttons wear out over time and stop making reliable contact with the board. We can replace the button pad or the full fob shell depending on availability for your vehicle.
In rare cases, the fob is fine and the problem is on the vehicle's end. If we test the fob and confirm it is transmitting correctly, we will let you know so you can have the vehicle's receiving module checked.
