As the vehicles have gotten more advanced, so have the key systems. If you need a Hyundai key replaced, a fob programmed, or help getting back into a locked vehicle, Locksmith 4 Less has the brand-specific tools and experience to take care of it at your location.
Before we get into key types and services, there is something Hyundai owners need to be aware of. Starting in 2021, a wave of vehicle thefts targeting specific Hyundai and Kia models gained national attention. The issue centered on certain 2011 to 2021 Hyundai models that were manufactured without an electronic immobilizer, making them vulnerable to a simple theft method that spread widely through social media.
The affected models include certain Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Santa Fe, Venue, Accent, and Veloster vehicles that used a traditional turn-key ignition with no transponder chip. Hyundai has since issued software updates and security kits to address the vulnerability.
If you own a Hyundai from this era and you are not sure whether your vehicle has an immobilizer, call us. We can tell you based on your year, model, and trim. If your vehicle is one of the affected models, we can also discuss your options for upgrading your key and lock security, including adding a steering wheel lock or upgrading to a vehicle with a transponder-based key system.
This issue also means that if your Hyundai was stolen and recovered, you may need the ignition and locks serviced before the vehicle is safe to drive again. We handle ignition lock repair, replacement, and rekeying for Hyundai vehicles.
As noted above, some Hyundai models shipped without a transponder chip. These vehicles use a standard metal key that can be cut based on the key code alone. No programming is required, but the lack of an immobilizer is the root of the theft vulnerability.
Higher-trim Hyundai models and certain model years did include a transponder chip in the key. The Sonata, for example, had an immobilizer standard on most trims well before some other Hyundai models did. These keys require programming to the vehicle's immobilizer module.
Hyundai used a switchblade-style key on several models. The metal blade folds into the fob body, and the remote buttons are built into the housing. These require both key cutting and electronic programming.
The Sonata was one of the first Hyundai models to get a push-button smart key. Today, the Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, Elantra, Kona, Ioniq, and Santa Cruz all use some version of Hyundai's smart key system. The driver carries the fob and the car handles entry and ignition wirelessly.
We replace all Hyundai key types, from basic metal keys to smart key fobs. If you have lost every key, we create one from scratch at your location.
Hyundai models with transponders, flip keys, and smart keys all require electronic programming. We carry the diagnostic equipment to pair new keys to Hyundai's specific immobilizer protocols.
Hyundai fob not working? We start with a battery test, then inspect the circuit board and housing. If the fob can be repaired, we fix it. If it needs to be replaced, we have it covered.
