Early Nissans including the Hardbody truck, Pathfinder, 240SX, and first-generation Maxima used a plain metal key with no electronic component. These keys are rare today but still show up on occasion.
Nissan introduced transponder chip keys starting in the late 1990s. The Altima, Maxima, Sentra, Frontier, Xterra, and Pathfinder from this era all used transponder keys. Nissan's system uses a 46-type chip on most models, similar to what Honda used during the same period. The chip communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer, and the engine will not start unless the codes match.
Nissan combined the transponder key and remote buttons into a single integrated unit on models like the Altima, Rogue, and Pathfinder. The key blade is built into the remote head, so the entire unit needs to be replaced if either the key or the remote portion fails.
Nissan's proximity smart key system rolled out starting with the Altima and Maxima and is now standard across the entire current lineup. The driver carries the fob, and the car handles keyless entry and push-button start wirelessly. Every Intelligent Key fob includes an emergency blade inside for manual door access if the battery dies.
When your Nissan dashboard shows a key icon with a line through it, the car is telling you it cannot detect the Intelligent Key fob. The most common cause is a low fob battery. If the warning appears intermittently, the battery is likely on its way out. If it is constant, the fob may have lost its programming or the battery may be completely dead.
Many Nissan models have a small slot in the center console or steering column where you can insert the Intelligent Key fob directly if the wireless signal is not being detected. This is the backup start method. Insert the fob into the slot, press the brake, and press the start button. If the car starts this way, the fob battery needs to be replaced.
Some Nissan trims include a remote start button on the Intelligent Key fob. This feature uses the same fob battery, so if your remote start stops working, it is usually a battery issue rather than a system failure.
We replace every Nissan key type at your location. Metal keys, transponder keys, remote head keys, and Intelligent Key fobs. No original key required.
Nissan Intelligent Key fobs require professional diagnostic equipment to pair with the vehicle's body control module. We carry the Nissan-specific tools to complete the programming on-site.
Nissan fobs use a CR2025 or CR2032 coin battery depending on the model year. We swap batteries, test the fob, and if the problem goes beyond the battery, we repair or replace the unit.
Locked your keys inside your Nissan? We open Nissan doors using non-destructive entry tools. No damage to the vehicle.
— Older Nissans with a physical ignition cylinder can develop wear, particularly the Altima and Maxima from the 2002 to 2012 range. We repair or replace the cylinder on-site.
Some Nissan models use a high-security key profile on both the primary key blade and the emergency blade inside the Intelligent Key fob. We carry the cutting equipment for these.
Have one working Nissan key? Get a spare made now. It is faster and cheaper than replacing from scratch later.
Altima. The 2002 to 2006 Altima used a transponder key with a separate remote. The 2007 to 2012 Altima introduced the Intelligent Key on some trims while others kept the transponder key. The 2013 and newer Altima uses the Intelligent Key across all trims. The Altima is also one of the most popular models on the used car market in Memphis, which means we frequently get calls from buyers who received only one key when they purchased the vehicle.
Rogue. The first-generation Rogue (2008 to 2013) used either a remote head key or an Intelligent Key depending on trim. The second generation (2014 to 2020) standardized the Intelligent Key. The current third generation (2021 to present) uses the latest version of the Intelligent Key with updated encryption.

The current Frontier uses an Intelligent Key with push-button start. Older Frontiers from the 2005 to 2021 generation used a transponder key with a traditional ignition. Work truck owners in Memphis, Arlington, and West Memphis put heavy daily mileage on these trucks, and the keys and ignition cylinders wear accordingly.
The Titan has used the Intelligent Key system since the second generation launched in 2016. First-generation Titans (2004 to 2015) used a transponder key. If your Titan's key blade is showing wear after years of construction site use, get a fresh one cut before it breaks.
