Locksmith 4 Less

Infiniti Locksmith in Memphis, TN

Infiniti is Nissan’s luxury division, and like its parent brand, it uses key and security systems that require specialized tools and software to work with. The Intelligent Key system that Infiniti pioneered has been standard across the lineup for over a decade, and even older Infiniti models used Nissan-based transponder platforms that are distinct from what domestic brands use.
If you drive an Infiniti in the Memphis area and need key service, Locksmith 4 Less has the equipment to handle it. We come to your location with the diagnostic tools, key blanks, and fobs needed to service every Infiniti model on the road.

Infiniti's Intelligent Key System

How the Infiniti Intelligent Key Works

Infiniti was one of the earliest luxury brands to adopt a full proximity-based smart key system, and they branded it the “Intelligent Key.” Understanding how it works helps explain what is involved when you need a replacement.
The Intelligent Key fob communicates wirelessly with sensors built into the door handles and the vehicle interior. When you approach the car with the fob in your pocket or bag, the sensors detect it and unlock the doors. Once inside, you press the push-button start and the car verifies the fob’s encrypted signal before allowing the engine to start.
The system also includes a backup method. Inside every Infiniti Intelligent Key fob, there is a small emergency key blade. If the fob battery dies, you can use that blade to manually unlock the driver’s door. To start the car with a dead fob, you hold the fob directly against the push-button start button, and the car reads the chip through close-range contact.
We program replacement Intelligent Key fobs for every Infiniti model that uses this system. The process requires Nissan/Infiniti-specific diagnostic software to pair the new fob with your vehicle’s body control module.

Infiniti Key Types

Key Types Across the Infiniti Lineup

Intelligent Key (smart key fob).

Used on the vast majority of Infiniti models from approximately 2007 to present. This is the standard proximity fob with keyless entry and push-button start. Models include the Q50, Q60, QX50, QX55, QX60, QX80, and their predecessors (G35, G37, M35, M37, FX35, FX50, JX35, EX35, QX56).

Transponder keys (early to mid-2000s).

Some earlier Infiniti models, particularly the I30, I35, and early G35, used a transponder chip key with a traditional key blade and a separate remote fob. The key starts the car and the fob handles lock/unlock functions independently.

Laser-cut keys.

Several Infiniti models use a high-security sidewinder key cut on the emergency blade inside the smart key fob. This cut requires specialized equipment that standard key machines cannot replicate.

Infiniti and Nissan: Related but Separate

How Infiniti Keys Relate to Nissan

Since Infiniti is built on Nissan platforms, the underlying key technology is shared between the two brands. Infiniti’s Intelligent Key is essentially Nissan’s Intelligent Key with Infiniti-specific programming. The diagnostic tools overlap, and the transponder chip families are from the same Nissan lineage.
However, an Infiniti fob is not interchangeable with a Nissan fob. The programming codes, part numbers, and fob designs are vehicle-specific. A Nissan Pathfinder fob will not start an Infiniti QX60, even though both SUVs share the same platform underneath.
This shared architecture works in your favor when it comes to locksmith service. Because we already carry Nissan diagnostic equipment on every van, we are fully equipped to service Infiniti vehicles without needing separate or additional tools. If you have both a Nissan and an Infiniti in your household, we handle both in a single visit.

When the Intelligent Key Stops Working

Troubleshooting Before You Call

If your Infiniti Intelligent Key suddenly stops working, there are a few things worth checking before picking up the phone.

Try the second fob.

If you have a spare and it works, the issue is with the original fob, not the car. That points to a dead battery or a damaged fob.

Check the fob battery.

Infiniti Intelligent Key fobs use a CR2025 or CR2032 coin battery depending on the model year. If the dashboard is displaying a "Key ID Incorrect" or "No Key Detected" warning, a weak battery is the most likely cause.

Try the emergency start method

Hold the dead fob directly against the push-button start. If the car starts, the fob battery is dead but the chip inside is still functional. A simple battery replacement solves the problem.

If none of that works, call us at (901) 206-2020. The issue may be a failed fob circuit, a problem with the vehicle’s receiver module, or a programming fault. We diagnose and fix it at your location in Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, or anywhere in our service area.
