Locksmith 4 Less

Ford Locksmith in Memphis, TN

Ford is the second most common brand we service in the Memphis area, right behind Chevrolet. F-150s dominate the truck lanes, Explorers and Escapes fill parking lots across Germantown and Bartlett, Mustangs cruise Poplar Avenue, and older Crown Victorias and Tauruses are still running daily routes across the city.
Ford has used more key system variations over the past 25 years than almost any other manufacturer. That means the type of service you need depends heavily on your specific model and year. Locksmith 4 Less carries Ford-specific diagnostic equipment, key blanks, and programming software on every mobile locksmith van. We handle it all, at your location, any time.

Ford Key Systems Explained

Ford's Key Technology from Past to Present

Ford has gone through more key system changes than most brands, and understanding what your vehicle uses is the first step to knowing what a replacement involves.

PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System).

Ford introduced PATS in 1996 and has used it in various forms ever since. The system relies on a transponder chip in the key that communicates with a receiver module near the ignition. If the chip is not recognized, the engine will not start. Early PATS keys look like a normal metal key with a slightly thicker head. The chip is hidden inside.

PATS

PATS has gone through multiple generations. Older Ford models use a fixed-code transponder, while newer versions use an encrypted rolling code. The programming process is different for each generation, and some require two working keys to add a third. If you only have one key or no keys at all, that is where a professional locksmith makes the difference.

Integrated keyhead transmitters (IKT).

Ford combined the transponder key and the remote buttons into a single unit on many models starting in the mid-2000s. The Explorer, F-150, Escape, and Fusion all used some version of this format. The key blade is built into the remote head, so if the fob cracks or the buttons fail, the entire unit needs attention.

Proximity smart keys.

Current Ford models including the F-150, Explorer, Escape, Bronco, Bronco Sport, Maverick, and Mustang use a push-button smart key system. The fob stays in your pocket, and the truck or car handles entry and ignition wirelessly. Ford calls this their "Intelligent Access" system.

Older standard keys.

Pre-PATS Fords from the early 1990s and before used a plain metal key with no electronics. These are simple to cut but increasingly rare.

The F-150 and Ford Truck Section

Key Service for F-150, Super Duty, Ranger, and Maverick Owners

Ford trucks account for the majority of our Ford service calls across the Memphis metro. If you drive a truck, here is what you should know about your keys.

F-150 (1997 to present).

The F-150 has used every Ford key system in the book. Late 1990s and 2000s models use PATS transponder keys. The 2009 to 2014 generation introduced the integrated keyhead transmitter with a flip key option on some trims. The 2015 and newer models use Ford's Intelligent Access smart key. We service every F-150 generation.

Super Duty (F-250, F-350).

The Super Duty has historically lagged behind the F-150 in adopting new key technology. Some 2017 to 2019 Super Duty trucks still use a traditional PATS key with no remote buttons, while the same year F-150 had already moved to smart keys. Always give us the exact year and trim when you call.

Ranger.

The current Ranger uses a proximity smart key. Older Rangers from the 2000s used a basic PATS transponder key. The 1990s models used a plain metal key with no chip.

Maverick.

Ford's compact truck uses the Intelligent Access smart key system from the factory.

We carry blanks and fobs for the entire Ford truck lineup on our vans. Whether your truck is parked at a job site in Millington, a driveway in Oakland, or a parking lot in Olive Branch, we come to you.

The Two-Key Rule

Why Ford's Two-Key Programming Matters

Ford’s PATS system has a feature that every Ford owner should know about. On many model years, if you have two working keys, you can add a third key through an on-board programming procedure. But if you are down to one key, that shortcut no longer works. And if you have zero keys, the replacement process requires professional diagnostic equipment to bypass the PATS module and start fresh.
What this means in practical terms:
If you have two Ford keys right now, adding a spare is relatively quick and affordable. If you only have one, the process is more involved and costs more. If you have none, it is the most expensive scenario of all.
The takeaway is simple. If you are a Ford owner with a single key, getting a duplicate made now while your one key still works is the smartest money you can spend on your vehicle’s security. Once that key is lost, the price goes up significantly.

FAQ

Ford Locksmith Questions

Can you make a Ford key if I have no working keys?

Yes. We use professional diagnostic equipment to interface with Ford’s PATS module and create a new key from scratch. It takes longer than duplicating an existing key, but we handle it at your location.
This usually means the smart key battery is too weak for the car to detect the fob wirelessly. Try holding the fob directly against the push-button start button and pressing it. That should start the car. Then call us to replace the fob battery so it works normally again.
Yes. We service the Transit, Transit Connect, and E-Series. Fleet owners with multiple vehicles can schedule a single visit to handle keys for the whole fleet.
Most F-150 key replacements are done in 30 to 60 minutes. Smart key programming on the newer models may take slightly longer.
Yes. We use the same quality key blanks and the same programming protocols. The end result is a key that starts your Ford the same way a dealer-issued key would.
