Locksmith 4 Less

Subaru Locksmith in Memphis, TN

Subaru has built a loyal following, and Memphis is no exception. The Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek are popular choices for drivers who want all-wheel drive without stepping up to a full-size SUV, and the Impreza and Legacy have been reliable sedans for years. Subaru owners tend to be committed to the brand, often buying one Subaru after another, and they tend to keep their vehicles for a long time.
That loyalty means we see Subarus at every stage of their life cycle, from new Outbacks with smart keys to 15-year-old Foresters with worn transponder keys that barely turn in the ignition. Locksmith 4 Less services every Subaru model at your location across the Memphis service area.

Subaru Key Types

Subaru Key Systems by Generation

Subaru took a conservative approach to key technology for a long time. The brand stuck with transponder keys well into the 2010s while many competitors had already moved to smart keys. That has changed with the current generation, but it means there are a lot of transponder-era Subarus still in daily use.

Non-transponder metal keys (1990s and before)

The earliest Subarus, including the Legacy, Impreza, SVX, and Loyale, used a standard metal key with no electronics. These are simple to cut and still occasionally show up in our service calls.

Transponder keys (early 2000s to mid-2010s).

Starting around 2000, Subaru began adding transponder chips to their keys. The Outback, Forester, Impreza, Legacy, Tribeca, and Baja from this era all used a transponder key with a metal blade. Subaru used a Texas Instruments-type chip that communicates with the immobilizer module. The engine will not start unless the correct chip is present.

Most Subarus from this period also had a separate remote fob for lock/unlock that was independent from the key. If you lost the remote but still had the key, the car would start fine. If you lost the key but had the remote, the car would not start. We replace and program both.

Proximity smart keys (2013 to present)

Subaru began introducing push-button smart keys starting with the 2014 Forester and 2015 Outback on higher trims. By now, the Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Impreza, Legacy, WRX, Ascent, and Solterra all offer or standardize the smart key system. The fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle for keyless entry and push-button start, and includes an emergency blade inside for manual door access.

Services

Subaru Locksmith Services

Car Key Replacement

We replace every Subaru key type at your location. Transponder keys for older models, smart key fobs for current models, and basic metal keys for the earliest Subarus. No original key needed.

Car Key Programming

— Subaru transponder keys and smart keys both require electronic programming. We carry the diagnostic equipment to pair new keys to Subaru's immobilizer system across all model years.

Key Fob Repair and Battery Replacement

Subaru fob not responding? We test the battery, inspect the housing and circuit board, and either repair the fob or replace it.

Car Lockout

Locked your keys inside your Subaru? We use non-destructive entry tools to open the vehicle without damage. Subaru's door and window seal design varies by model, and we know the right approach for each one.

Ignition Lock Repair and Replacement

Older Subarus with a physical ignition cylinder can develop wear after years of daily use. The 2005 to 2014 Outback and Forester are the models we see this on most frequently. We repair or replace the cylinder on-site.

Car Key Duplication

— Have one working Subaru key? A spare made now is cheaper and faster than a full replacement later. We duplicate transponder keys and smart keys at your location.

The Two-Piece Key and Remote Situation

Why Older Subaru Owners Often Need Two Things Replaced

One thing that sets older Subarus apart from many other brands is the two-piece system: the transponder key is one unit and the remote fob is a separate unit. On most brands from the same era, the key and the remote were already being combined into a single integrated piece. Subaru kept them separate longer.
This matters because when an older Subaru owner calls us, they sometimes need one piece replaced and sometimes need both. Here is how to tell what you need:
If you lost the key but still have the remote fob: You need a new transponder key cut and programmed. The remote will still work for lock/unlock.
If the remote fob stopped working but the key still starts the car: You likely just need a fob battery replacement or a new remote programmed. The key itself is fine.
If you lost everything: We replace both the transponder key and the remote fob and program them both to your vehicle in a single visit.
The two-piece system also means that if your remote breaks, you do not necessarily need a new key. And if your key wears out, you do not need a new remote. We diagnose which component is the issue and replace only what is needed, which saves you money.

Subaru and the Outdoors

Key Tips for Subaru Owners Who Use Their Vehicles Hard

Subaru markets its vehicles around outdoor adventure, and many Memphis-area Subaru owners use them accordingly. Camping trips, kayak launches, trail hikes, and weekend road trips to state parks are all situations where keys can get lost, wet, or damaged.

We made similar points on the Jeep page, and they apply here too:

Carry a waterproof pouch for your fob.

If you are around water, protect the fob. A waterlogged smart key is an expensive problem.

Know where your emergency blade is.

Every Subaru smart key has a small blade inside the fob. If the battery dies while you are at a trailhead, that blade is the only way to manually unlock the driver's door. Practice extracting it before you need to.

Keep a spare key at home.

If your Subaru is your adventure vehicle, the risk of losing a key in the field is higher than average. A duplicate stored at home means a lost key on a Saturday hike does not turn into an emergency. You drive the spare back out and deal with the replacement on Monday.

If your Subaru key does get damaged or lost during an outing, call us. Our mobile locksmith teams cover the entire Memphis metro area and can meet you wherever you are parked.

Subaru Dealer vs. Locksmith

Why Subaru Owners Choose Us Over the Dealer

Subaru dealerships provide good service, and the brand’s customer satisfaction ratings are consistently high. But when it comes to key replacement specifically, the locksmith route has clear advantages.

Speed.

The dealer typically requires an appointment and may need to order the key. We show up the same day with the parts on the van.

Convenience.

The dealer requires the car to be at their lot. If the car has no working key, that means a tow. We come to wherever the Subaru is parked, whether that is your driveway in Collierville, a parking lot in Cordova, or the side of the road in Bartlett.

Price.

Our rates are below the Subaru dealership for the same end result: a key that starts the car, locks the doors, and operates the smart entry system.

The key we program works identically to a dealer-issued key. Same blanks, same programming protocols, same result.
