This is the single most common reason a key fob stops working. The battery in most fobs lasts two to four years. If your fob has been gradually losing range or responsiveness, a dead battery is the likely cause. We offer key fob battery replacement at our shop or at your location, and it takes just a few minutes.
The circuit board inside the fob is damaged (often from water exposure or a hard drop)
One or more buttons are physically worn through and no longer making contact with the board
The fob's signal has become desynchronized from your vehicle and needs to be reprogrammed
The fob shell is cracked or broken, exposing the electronics to moisture and dirt
All of these are repairable. Call (901) 206-2020 and describe the symptoms. We will tell you whether it is worth repairing or whether a replacement fob makes more sense for your vehicle.
Repair makes sense when the fob body is intact, the circuit board is undamaged, and the issue is limited to a worn button, a dead battery, or a programming glitch. In these situations, a repair costs significantly less than a new fob and gets you the same result.
Replacement makes sense when the fob has been through water damage, the circuit board is visibly corroded or cracked, or the shell is so broken that it no longer protects the electronics. At that point, putting money into a repair is not a good investment. We carry replacement fobs for a wide range of vehicles and can program them to your car on the spot.
If your fob has a built-in key blade (the metal key that folds out of the fob body), a replacement fob will also need the blade cut to match your door locks and ignition. We handle the cutting and programming together so you leave with a fully working unit.
Standard remote fobs. These are standalone remotes that lock and unlock the doors but do not have a key blade attached. They communicate with the car over a short-range radio signal.
Integrated key fobs. These combine the physical key blade with the remote buttons in one unit. Honda, Toyota, Ford, and many other brands use this style.
Flip key fobs. The key blade folds into the fob body when not in use. Popular with Volkswagen, Kia, and Hyundai among others.
Smart key fobs These are proximity-based fobs for push-to-start vehicles. They do not require insertion into the ignition. Nissan, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, and many newer models use smart key systems.
